Newton Stewart

a golfer's paradise and more.

Newton Stewart, in the heart of Galloway, south-west Scotland, is the perfect place for a short break or longer holiday.

The town sits in the beautiful river Cree valley with majestic granite hills as a backdrop. These are the second highest range in Scotland. The river flows southwest leading to Wigtown Bay. The local area can provide different golfing challenges as there are 10 other courses within a 30-mile radius, including the world famous Turnberry resort. The Galloway area can provide some of the best fishing in Scotland, the Cree which runs through Newton Stewart (salmon and trout) and the Bladnoch which runs close to Wigtown eight miles away, which is Scotland’s National Book Town and home to Britain’s largest Local Nature Reserve and a breeding pair of ospreys.

Newton Stewart itself is on the edge of the Galloway Forest Park, the UK’s largest forest which has also just become the first official internationally recognised dark sky area outside North America (November 2009). With so little light pollution, this is the perfect place for astronomers to do a little stargazing!

The Forest Park offers numerous walking trails as well as the best mountain biking trails outside North America. There are three Forest Visitor Centres, Glentrool on the edge of the stunning Loch Trool, Clatteringshaws, on the equally stunning Clatteringshaws Loch and Kirroughtree, the main centre which has bike hire facilities for all the family, a tea room and children’s adventure playground.

As well as being a golfing and fishing paradise, the area is also a walkers' paradise with excellent hillwalking in the Galloway Hills and some stunning coastal walks too.

Newton Stewart itself has a number of tea rooms, eating places and hotels and a range of independently-owned shops as well as an excellent community-owned Cinema. Other nearby attractions include:

- The Children’s Chocolate Factory - perfect for children (and grown-ups!)
- Cream o’ Galloway - Features a large adventure park and home-made Galloway ice cream
- The Gem Rock Museum
- The Galloway Wildlife Park
- Monreith Animal World

Horse riding, paintballing and off-road driving in tanks and other vehicles are also available within the area as well as a number of unspoilt sandy beaches, perfect in summer.
