Water comes into play on two of the holes and patches of wild gorse which will punish wild shots.
Renowned for its hospitality, visitors are most welcome all year round as Newton Stewart is known as the friendly place to play golf.
Hole 1 - Whinney Knowe
With the out of bounds up the right the tee shot is a slicers nightmare. The educated line is the bunker. A good drive will leave a short iron to the green. |
Hole
2
-
Old
Edinburgh
Road
From a raised tee the hole looks straight forward enough, but again out
of bounds threatens the slice.
Deep rough behind the green can be troublesome in summer. |
Hole
3
-
Houlit's
Nest
An accurate tee shot with a longish iron is needed.
Miss the green and your short game will be tested. |
Hole
4
-
Drumwhirren
Bunkers to the left and right of the fairway catch many balls. Aim to land
short of the green when it's hard underfoot and let the ball run on. |
Hole
5
-
Conifers
Stroke index 1, and rightly so, as it plays its full length whatever the
conditions. On in two, two putts, and be delighted with a par! |
Hole
6 - Doocot
A deceptively tough short hole with a two tier green.
Settle for 3. |
Hole
7 - Luk' About 'Ee
The line off the tee is the carved granite rock in the centre
of the fairway. Take time on the green, which is best approached
with an iron aimed left, to admire the views... |
Hole
8 - Preachers Stone
From beside the pond your drive should be launched at the marker
post which only the longer hitters get near. A blind shot into
the green is often required. Like the 4th, drop it well short
in dry conditions. |
Hole
9 - Lily Pond
The tee shot is critical; a good one with a driver rewards you
with a short iron to a raised green. But if you are off-line,
expect to find trouble. |
Hole
10 - Gushet
Not as tough a tee shot as it looks. The green is downhill and
generous - just don't miss it. |
Hole
11
-
Glasnick
First of the par 5's. When the ball is running, low handicappers will reach
the green in two, but experienced players reckon there are more birdies
taking three to the putting surface. |
Hole
12 - Soup Plate
Intimidating tee shot with the green surrounded by whins. This
hole wrecks many a good card. |
Hole
13
-
The
Dyke
Three good hits to the green. Mind the bunkers and out of bounds on the
right! |
Hole
14 - Bower Wood
From the tee aim at the ancient hawthorn tree to a narrow fairway.
Don't be long with your shot to the green. |
Hole
15 - Old Minnigaff
A straight drive over the marker post will set you up for a wedge
into the green. Bunkers guard the entrance so don't be short. |
Hole
16 - Thorny Brae
A lovely dogleg hole. Keep left off the elevated tee, but beware
the bunkers. Go long on the green and a tricky downhill putt
is your fate. |
Hole
17 - Punchbowl
Splendid view from the tee of Cairnsmore of Fleet, especially
in Autumn. But concentrate; this hole has fooled many. |
Hole
18
-
Kirroughtree
The park on the right is out of bounds, but this is the last chance to
take out the driver - go for it! All the bunkers are in view. You have
been warned... |
